The Cheyenne and Black Hills Stage and Express Routes

$18.00

The Cheyenne and Black Hills Stage and Express Routes by Agnes Wright Spring

This book documents the stage routes between, you guessed it, the Deadwood gold mines and Cheyenne, Wyoming. The route carried “thousands of passenger, tons upon tons of freight and express, and millions of dollars worth of ‘treasure’”. While other routes failed, this trail branched out to allow for detours to avoid the certain dangers of travel.

In the very first chapter, the author tells us about a Belgian missionary, Father DeSmet, warning the Sioux in the 1830’s of the great value of gold, and the certain doom should white men find it. this book weaves carefully researched facts (noticing the expansive bibliography) with anecdotes from early pioneers.

As someone who would like to know more about the historical geography of Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska, I should continue reading this book. It is old, a bit dingy, but has been comfortable on the shelf for too long. Paperback - good condition.
