Flying M: Boyhood Memories of North Dakota Farm Life
Flying M: Boyhood Memories of North Dakota Farm Life by Edward Maixner
If you grew up on a farm, or even if you grew up in Brooklyn, you will find this an interesting memoir. It is more contemporary than most of the books on my Midwest history bookshelf, 1950s - 1960’s, and very close to our own experiences.
This was a time of rapid improvements in farming technology. For instance, he describes moving grain, how it went from shoveling to using blowers to, finally, the invention of grain auger. He tells of heating water on the coal stove for baths in a galvanized aluminum tub in the kitchen. Little kids first, as I recall, at my Grandma’s house.
He tells about the Catholic boarding school in New England, which is now a women’s prison, which drew kids from the South Dakota reservations who had found too many ways to make trouble. Boarding was also an option for local farming families when the weather and road conditions made the daily commute impossible.
