From This Valley
From this Valley by Clarice Olson Adelmann published 1982
The title of this book refers lovingly to the song, Red River Valley, your know, “From this valley, they say you are going…”. This song was special to me as my father would play guitar and sing it often. Like Clarice, I was disappointed to learn that the song was about that Red River in Texas, not the Red River that flowed north into Canada.
I spent a few years in the Fargo learning about flood plains and consequences of building in them and how the east half of North Dakota was so different from west of the Missouri. The flat windy landscape of prehisoric Lake Agassiz was not the valley in the song, but like Clarice, I still consider it our song.
Her story is the among those personal stories of pioneer families, another cultural snapshot of people who came out west, endured hardships, and raised families. There are those memories that are tied to the Swedish heritage, and those, like the visit from the Watkins man, that were particular to her time.
Paperback - very good condition.
