Giving Voice to Bear: North American Indian Myths, Rituals, and Images of the Bear by David Rockwell

Anthropology is the study of man, so I was told. This is a study of Native American beliefs and rituals inspired by their study of bears, that is, how the bear can heal man, and define his greatest powers.

For example, the book describes the Lakota men who became the medicine men because they dreamed of the bear. The members of the Bear Society are very wakan. When a man was wounded, the bear tipi is set up, the floor is covered with sage, the Bears bring in drums and sing. They bring medicines. The Pueblo also associate the bear with healing.
