Vintage Reed Bench Vise 406R
Reed Manufacturing Bench Vise 406R with swivel base and swivel jaw. Of all the treasures my husband had to leave behind, this is the one he prized most, calling my attention to “that blue vise”. Indeed, it sports the highly prized Reed name, and as No. 406 R means it has the post-WWII design revisions that put it at the top in the world of vises.
Jaw width - 6”
Maximum opening 9”
Weight 164 Lbs
Swivel base mount with four point attach
Oil ports
Made in Erie, PA
Heavy coat of blue paint - (let’s call it protective)
Previous owner parted with it sadly when he moved to smaller digs. He said it worked “like a champ”. Reed is considered the best manufacturer of vises in the world, founded in 1896. mainly because they “have heavier castings”. R-series is most highly valued of their vices for various features. (Check out this video - GeorgesGarage) The aqua blue photos are from the prior seller. The fourth photo is recent - the vise has only taken on some neglect, not abuse, these past ten years, so a bit of surface rust has presented.
See page 100 of the 1931 Harris catalog, and detail from the 1979 Reed catalog.
