Slim Buttes, 1876: An Episode of the Great Sioux War by Jerome A. Greene

We recently visited a small gravesite commemorating the Battle of Slim Buttes, near the northwestern South Dakota unincorporated town of Reva.

The battle was lauded as the first victory after the defeat at the General Custer at the Little Big Horn in Montana. Under General George Crook’s leadership, 150 starving soldiers attacked a large Indian village for food. General Crook had orders to subdue the Cheyenne and Teton Sioux Indians.

Crook’s campaign became known as the “Horsemeat March” as traveling light and fast had lead to starvation and devouring their own horses. The suffering was not limited to the soldiers as the the villages were attacked by surprise and without provocation.

It was a mission, as General Crook said, “without favor or hope of reward.”

Greene wrote this book for the National Park Service, creating a thorough accounting of the events leading up to the battle, the people, and the consequences.
